Protect Our Democracy: Statement from National Interfaith Power & Light

by | Jan 11, 2021 | News

On Wednesday, January 6th, the world watched as a violent mob including white supremacists waving Confederate flags breached the Capitol and rampaged through the halls, threatening the lives of our elected representatives and Capitol Hill personnel, in an attempt to overturn a free and fair election. Lives were senselessly lost in the mayhem, and we grieve for them and their families.

President Trump and his allies incited the insurrection, and they must be held accountable.

Thankfully, due to the diligence and courage of many members of Congress, the certification of the election was completed early Thursday morning. Yet over 100 legislators still voted to overturn the election results.

To redeem our democracy, the faith of the people, and the morality of our government, we call for the removal of the president from office immediately, by any lawful means, and the censure of those members of Congress who voted to overturn the will of the people.

Though his remaining time in office is short, the president’s actions are a clear and present danger to national and global security. He must be removed from office for the safety of our country and our world.

As people of faith and conscience, we are committed to both racial and climate justice and know we cannot work to heal the divisions in our nation before first providing accountability and justice

These are dark days and our most sacred democratic institutions have been defiled. But as we reject despotism, racism, and white supremacy we can create the world we want: one in line with our moral values of justice, peace, and love for our neighbors and all of Creation.

Faithfully,

Interfaith Power & Light team
