14-year-old climate activist, Lillian Hill, is fueled by the desire to create positive, meaningful change.
In October 2021, the eighth-grader from Johnston, Iowa organized a demonstration at the Iowa State Capitol to call for swift and meaningful climate action. Now, she wants to make a larger impact when representatives are in session
“Iowa legislators need to realize Iowans want climate action now, not in 30 years. Right now they have a choice: do our legislators want to be individuals that future generations remember as leaders, or rather scared politicians?”
Our young leaders know how important climate action is, and they need our support. There is no time to waste. Their future is in our hands.
Lily plans to host monthly climate strikes in 2022 inside the Iowa State Capitol, 1007 East Grand Avenue, Des Moines, IA 50319. Strikers are encouraged to create their own signs, posters, or banners, but please refrain from using wooden sticks as they are not permitted in the building. Strike dates are as follows:
- January 10th, 2022 at 2 PM
- February 21st, 2022 at 2 PM
- March 28th, 2022 at 11 AM** Please note time change
- April 19th, 2022 at 2 PM
As the 2022 legislative session begins, we must keep climate action at the top of legislators’ agendas. As people of faith and conscience, we know climate is a moral issue we want to see addressed as soon as possible.
We know that a sustainable future with a thriving world, a fairer economy, and environmental and racial justice is possible. Developing climate legislation means including all voices, including youth, BIPOC, and other minority groups. Join Lily and Iowa IPL on January 10th at the capitol building to advocate for climate justice. We hope to see you there!
