Good news for houses of worship that have had difficulty filing for Direct Pay for their 2023 Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) projects! Thanks to tenacious advocacy from leaders across the Interfaith Power & Light network, and our partners at the Congressional Progressive Caucus Center and Lawyers for Good Government, there is now an extended filing window regardless if you filed an extension or not.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Deadline Extension: If your tax year ends between December 31, 2023, and November 30, 2024, you now have an additional six months beyond your original filing deadline to submit Form 990-T for Direct Pay.
- Temporary Paper Filing Option: The IRS is allowing nonprofits and religious organizations to paper-file for Direct Pay until November 15, 2024. Typically, electronic filing is required, but this temporary relief allows more flexibility.
- Support for E-filing: Between now and November 15, 2024, Giraffe Financial is partnering with Lawyers for Good Government to offer reduced-cost e-filing services for organizations that want to file electronically and have their tax forms ready. Learn more here.
Please note that applicable entities are still required to complete the pre-filing registration process through IRS Energy Credits Online and provide a valid registration number when submitting their return. To assist with this, the IRS is offering virtual office hours (listed below) to support the pre-filing registration process. Additionally, the IRS has released a video tutorial on how to prepare and file Form 990-T, Form 3800, and the necessary source credit forms for specific credits.
