CALLED TO CLIMATE ACTION
Are you a young person called to Climate Action?
We Are Called
The climate continues to change and we know we must respond. That’s why Iowa IPL works with a group of college student leaders each summer and creates opportunities for colleges to create action on their campuses.
“Called to Climate Action” focuses on empowering college students to lean into their faith when solving this crisis. Our vision has taken off and young leaders are engaging in faith-based climate solutions across the state. We do this through our summer leadership program and annual fall Called to Climate Action event.
STUDENT LEADERSHIP PROGRAM
The summer leadership program is a paid opportunity for Iowa college students. Students work together to write Iowa IPL’s yearly environmental justice faith statement and plan our annual Called to Climate Action event. The position will begin in late May and end in mid-August. Student leaders will be paid $2200 during the summer as independent contractors.
Over the summer our student leaders:
Collaborate with their peers to find inclusion and consensus
Learn about religious traditions different from their own
Work together to write a shared statement on climate action for Iowans
Write opinion editorials, blog posts, and social media copy
Shape and participate in statewide interfaith climate action public event in the fall
Are given public speaking opportunities centered on climate justice
Understand and articulate better the intersection of their faith and intersectional justice
Apply to Become a Student Leader
We will be accepting applications for our 2022 Called to Climate Action student leaders in March 2022. Please send a cover letter and resume with the subject line of “Student Leader Application” to Irene DeMaris. Let us know why you are #CalledToClimateAction and what you want to get out of the experience. The process will be open until we fill all positions.
Working with Iowa IPL gave me the opportunity to connect with other Iowa college students who care and work together to create a statement that touches on the interconnectedness of climate justice, racial justice, and economic justice.

GETTING INVOLVED WITH CAMPUS CLIMATE ACTION
We also work with Iowa religious colleges/universities who have sponsored the program by investing in their own on-campus student leadership teams. In 2019, these teams conducted two climate actions before our annual October event. Those actions ranged from organizing climate strikes, letter-writing campaigns, and community video showings. In 2020, climate action looked a little different at colleges and voter turnout was a priority. We had two events, a student training in September in addition to our annual October event.
Please contact Irene DeMaris for information on how you can get involved, become a sponsor, and invest in a new generation of faith-based climate activists.

FEATURED CLIMATE ACTION
There are no shortages of stereotypes, experiences and pithy comments attributed to self-identified “farm kids.” We claim to have been taught firsthand about the circle of life, know the meaning of hard work, and have lived lives dictated by the cycles of calving, planting and harvest that are intrinsic to every farm’s operation.
Talking about the climate crisis is easy; taking action is the most difficult part. While every person experiences challenges in implementing policies or practices to support climate action goals, for people of color and low income communities, it is even more difficult.
Written by 2022 CTCA student leader, Kaelyn Howe
While it often feels naive to feel hope for a bright future, it is imperative that we shift our mindset from one of defeat and despondency to one of optimistic determination. The window of hope is still open and it is up to us to climb through it.
